Opening Story: Friska, the Sheep That Was Too Small by Rob Lewis. After Friska was born, she didn’t grow bigger like the other sheep in the flock. The others laughed at her small size and this made Friska feel quite unhappy. She tried everything to make herself look bigger, from covering herself with fluffy snow to using cherry blossoms to enhance her size. One day, Friska reveals her bravery when she saves the flock from a prowling wolf. Nobody had expected so much from such a small sheep! After Friska saves the day, the others in the flock realize that big things can come in small packages and they learn to love Friska just the way she is.
Discussion: Let’s share about a time that we felt brave. What was the situation and how did being brave make you feel? I will record each child’s answer for them on paper and then they can draw a picture to go with their bravery story.
Project: Friska puppets. Children will color a cutout of Friska and glue fluffy cotton balls to her body to represent her wool. We will attach our Friska puppets to big popsicle sticks and act out a Friska story of our own.
Skill Focus: Opposites. Our Friska puppets feel very soft. What is the opposite of soft? Can we think of some examples of things that are opposites of soft? Using a bag with some hidden objects, we will each have some turns taking an object out of the bag, and then as a group we will come up with some ideas about things that are its opposite.
Game: “Friska Says”. We will use our listening skills and play our own version of Simon Says, but Friska will be giving the instructions instead of Simon!
Closing Story: Charlie Needs a Cloak by Tomie dePaola
